Merlo is a district divided into the following areas: San Antonio de Padua, Merlo, Libertad, Parque San Martin, Mariano Acosta, and Pontevedra.
Merlo is located in Western Greater Buenos Aires, 32 km away from the City of Buenos Aires.
Merlo was founded by Don Francisco Xavier de Merlo in the year 1753 and the district carries his name.
In its origins the district was full of flour mills and other smaller industries. Merlo has a train station, that was originally named "Camino de Hierro de Buenos Aires al Oeste" (Iron Way from Buenos Aires to the West) known as the West Railway. Later the locomotive called "la Porteña" started travel these lines, and was the first train to reach Merlo in the year 1862.
There is a complex belonging to the Argentinean Air Force in Merlo that monitors the air traffic in the area.
